
Georges Engel was born on 7 September 1968 in Differdange.
Education and qualifications
After completing secondary school studies at the Lycée de garçons in Esch-sur-Alzette, Georges Engel went on to study at the EIULB (École d'infirmière Université libre de Bruxelles), which he completed with a diploma as a social nurse in 1991. Following complementary courses, he obtained a diploma as social hygiene assistant.
Governmental posts
On 5 January 2022, following the resignation of Dan Kersch, Georges Engel joined the coalition government formed by the Democratic Party (DP), the Luxembourg Socialist Workers' Party (LSAP) and the Green Party (déi gréng) as Minister of Sport and Minister of Labour, Employment and the Social and Solidarity Economy.
Other political posts
A member of the LSAP since 1993, Georges Engel was elected to the municipal council of Sanem in 1997.
In 2005, he was elected mayor of the municipality of Sanem, a position he held until 2020.
From 2010 until 2019, he was vice president of the LSAP.
Elected on the list for the constituency of the South, he joined the Parliament in February 2012, succeeding Lydie Err, who was appointed mediator.
Re-elected in 2013 and in 2018, he presided over the Parliamentary Committee on Labour, Employment and Social Security. He was also particularly involved in issues relating to the environment and to energy.
In January 2020, he became the chairman of the Socialist parliamentary group.
Professional activities
From 1991 onwards, Georges Engel worked as a social hygiene assistant at the Health and Social Welfare Centre in Differdange.
In 1997, he changed his position and was in charge of the health and social school service of the municipality of Pétange.
